Congratulations to the UF and USF Regional Activity Committees on a very successful conference!

The UF and USF Regional Activity wrapped up their awesome two-day conference this evening that was sure to equip each student in attendance with a few new tools for their future careers in public relations.

The one thing piece of advice that I learned this weekend was to: "network, network, network!" Our keynote speaker, Mr. John Paluszek, Senior Counsel for Ketchum NY & D.C., mentioned this phrase in his address this morning during the first session. He told us students that we should always be sure to "network, network, network"---and we did just that!

Actually, the networking opportunities began the first night of Regional Activity during the dinner social held at Beef O' Brady's on the USF campus. At first, us USF PR students mingled amongst ourselves, while the UF students did the same. Eventually, as the night went on, all of the PR Students from both schools were mix-and-mingling throughout the dining area, sharing our experiences and aspirations. We introduced ourselves and discussed our interests in PR. I learned the first night of Regional Activity that networking doesn't have to be so formal, and sometimes can be fun!

Furthermore, I learned the importance of networking with ALL individuals, not just PR professors and professionals. As I sat in the sessions this afternoon, a lot of students were networking amongst themselves. Whether they were sharing internship experiences and contacts, or telling a student about a job opening they'd seen that they thought would interest that student, the students made sure to network and exchange contact information throughout the day. I try to always keep this in mind the importance of meeting new people, and maintaining good relationships, because you never know who might be close friends with your next potential employer!

In a nut shell, a walked away with lots of valuable advice and ideas from this Regional Activity. But most of all, I think I enjoyed the networking opportunites as well. There were lots of seasoned professionals and practioners that spoke this afternoon, but there were also several student leaders and future PR experts that were willing to absorb and learn from today. Students mingled with these professionals during the network hour, where they gained one-on-one advice from local practitioners and professionals.

So remember, don't ever turn down a handshake or a business card from anyone, you never know who can get your foot in the door!
